Dues Payments

On-line payments using PayPal works very much like a typical internet shopping cart. When you select your first item, for instance, the white box for Regular AAS membership, a new window will pop-up. It is generated by PayPal and will look something like this:

Notice that if you made a mistake you can undo an item simply by checking the "Remove" box (on the left). Then hit the "Update Cart" button.

Notice also that the quantity (normally 1 since we are "selling" dues) is given -- be sure it is correct and there is also a description and price.

If the only thing you want is to renew your membership, you could hit the "Checkout" button now. But let's say that you also belong to the British Arachnological Society and, of course, ISA. You would simply go back to the still opened "ordering" window and select BAS just as you earlier selected the AAS. Once you do this, the PayPal window will update to show the changes:

and finally you would go back to the window and select ISA regular member and PayPal would update to show this choice:

Now, assuming you are done with dues paying, you hit the checkout button. If you are already a member of PayPal, you will have the chance to log in. If not, you will be guided through the process of registering with PayPal. Registration involves giving your typical credit card/ address information. Note that PayPal has an excellent Privacy Standard (please take the time to read their policy).

It is especially important that you specify a shipping address -- AAS needs somewhere to send you JoA and whatever other publications you asked for. If you forget to include this, it will force the membership secretary to contact you, so please, please specify the address where JoA is to be sent.

The rest of the procedure is fairly straightforward. You will receive an email confirmation of the transaction and since you will by now have a PayPal account, you can review the transaction from your PayPal Account webpage.

Donations

Donations are very important to the Society as they fund two separate research funds and, when unrestricted, can be used for anything that the Board believes is needed. The On-Line Dues sheet allows you to donate but there are a couple of things you should be aware of:

Donations involve a separate credit card charge from dues -- i.e., they do not appear in the "shopping cart" but instead in separate windows. (WebAdmin note -- this is PayPal's , not my, doing).

There will be a separate charge for each type of donation. Thus, if you want to make a gift to all three funds, each time you select a donation button, a new window associated with that donation will appear. Again, this is how PayPal structures things. One obvious advantage to you is that it makes it easy to keep donations separate from dues.

Let's say you decide to give $50 to the Vince Roth Systematics Fund. You would first hit the "Make a Donation to one of the AAS Research Funds or an unrestricted gift to the AAS" link on the "Dues" page. This will bring up the following window:

When you push the appropriate (Roth fund) white box button, the following PayPal window will appear:

and you would then fill in $50.00 as the amount and proceed as directed on the page.
