Scorpions are arguably
the most ancient of land arthropods and perhaps the most ancient of truly
terrestrial animals. Modern scorpions are famous for their modified pedipalps
that possess enlarged chela (pincers) and are important in prey capture,
defense, and mating.
Scorpions are equally famous for their poisonous sting at the rear of
their long "tail" or telson. Although scorpions all typically
carry poison, most species are not dangerous to humans or other mammals.
