Chetumal is located in the south of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, on the border with Belize. Chetumal is a quiet and safe place. It's a small town surrounded by mangrove swamps and tropical forests, home to numerous chelicerates in addition to Mayan remains, and lagoons such as Bacalar. It faces a gigantic bay that is a reserve for manatees and is located at the gateway to the Caribbean.

How to get to Chetumal

(1) Take a plane to Mexico City and then direct flight to Chetumal.

(2) Take plane to Cancún or Tulum and then reach Chetumal by bus (ADO company: www.ado.com.mx) or by hiring a car. The hotel offers free parking for congress participants.

You have a free “Fiesta Inn” bus from Chetumal airport toward Fiesta Inn Hotel (for participants with a room in the hotel).

When you arrive in Cancun airport, you have several options (Bus, taxi, private to go to the ADO station in Cancun and take your bus for Chetumal, https://www.cancunairporttransportation.com/bus-cancun-airport, https://transfercancun-airport.com/en/). The same if you arrive in Tulum airport (https://thetulumairport.com/airport-transportation/).

 

The venue

The meeting will be held at the attractive FIESTA INN HOTEL in Chetumal. https://www.fiestainn.com/en/hotels/fiesta-inn-chetumal

  • The Fiesta Inn Hotel has 24 hr shuttle service to and from the airport.  The hotel shuttles should be at the airport when flights arrive and should not need to be called.

 

Hotel FIESTA INN offers discount room rates for meeting participants. Reservation code: “G1QV0G@CHE” or “BA CONGRESO ARACNOLOGIA DE NORTEAMERICA”.

Price for room per night and for one or two people (1 king or 2 full): $1,486.00 MXN. Breakfast not included. Rooms can be occupied by 3 ($1,796.00 MXN) or 4 ($2,106.00 MXN) people, please ask when making the reservation. Price includes internet, free parking, access to pool and to gym, shuttle hotel – airport – hotel, and all taxes.

    AAS Student Grants

    Student Travel Grants provide support for high school, undergraduate or graduate student members of the AAS who have limited or no funding support, but plan to be presenting authors on a poster or oral presentation at the upcoming AAS meeting. Typical Award $250 to $800.

      Oral presentation

      Presentations will be 15 minutes in total, including questions. Since there are no simultaneous sessions, we will try to respect the 15 minutes to keep to the schedule. Please, prepare your presentations in MS Office PowerPoint for Windows (preferred). The delivery will be made by sending your presentations to the congress contact email address preferably before the June 24 or at the latest 1 day before the day of the presentation.

      Oral talks will be presented preferably in English. If you choose to present in Spanish, please make the slides available in English to make it easier for the audience to follow.

      We hope to have a translator available to assist with translation if needed during the question-and-answer sessions.

       

      Poster

      Posters will have a maximum size of 120 cm (47 inch) tall and 90 cm (35 inch) wide. Posters can be presented in English or Spanish. Posters may be hung at any time and must be ready for the poster session on Wednesday, June 26th at noon.

      Field trip

      After the meeting, there are several opportunities to visit ruins in the forest or natural sites on your own. We will give you all the information you need during the meeting.

      It is not possible to collect spiders during an organized excursion, as this requires collection and export permits in accordance with national laws. However, weather permitting, we will be organizing an evening spider tour on Wednesday evening on the ECOSUR campus.
