Purpose of the American Arachnological Society
The American Arachnological Society (AAS) is a professional organization dedicated to furthering the science and awareness of research on arachnids (spiders and their relatives) through the advancement and professional development of all its members. The AAS is dedicated to providing a safe, hospitable, and productive environment for everyone involved in research, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, physical appearance, cultural background, or sexual orientation. We value contributions by those interested in this part of Earth’s biodiversity regardless of your professional status. It is important to remember that a scientific community grows and progresses when it cultivates a culture of excellence based on mentorship, encouragement, tolerance, and mutual respect.
The AAS accomplishes the dissemination of information about arachnids through annual meetings, mentorship and support of the next generation of scientists, and through publications, including the Journal of Arachnology.
Meetings
The society hosts an annual meeting for professional and amateur arachnologists and students interested in arachnology to share research and ideas.
Supporting Graduate Studies
The society promotes undergraduate and graduate studies in arachnology by providing grants for travel to meetings and research, by recognition of high quality student presentations and posters at the annual meetings, by recognition of outstanding early career researchers, and by providing information on graduate study opportunities in the field of arachnology.
Publications
The society publishes a refereed research journal, the Journal of Arachnology, three times a year. It also publishes the Spiders of North America-An Identification Manual, and has provided support for the publication of Common Spiders of North America.
